About Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is a natural healthcare system that uses medicinal plants and plant extracts to support the body's own healing processes. Herbs contain active compounds that can help balance body systems, support organs, and promote overall wellbeing. Herbal medicine has been used safely across cultures for thousands of years and remains widely practised today.

Herbal medicine works by supporting the body rather than overriding it. Depending on the herb, remedies may help digestion, reduce inflammation, support the immune system, regulate hormones, calm the nervous system, or improve sleep and mood. A qualified medical herbalist selects herbs based on your individual health needs.

When used correctly and prescribed by a qualified herbalist, herbal medicine is considered safe for most people. Safety depends on choosing the right herbs, correct dosages, and understanding possible interactions with medications. Always seek professional advice for personalised treatment.

You can begin with gentle herbs such as chamomile, peppermint, lemon balm or lavender as herbal teas. For more targeted support, herbal tinctures are commonly used. If you have ongoing health concerns or take prescription medication, booking a consultation with a medical herbalist is recommended.

Clinic Naturae offers a free 15-minute consultation to help you get started.

Some herbal remedies are suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, while others should be avoided. Because every pregnancy is unique, it is important to seek professional guidance before using any herbal products at this time.

Yes, herbal medicine can be used for all ages, including children and older adults. Remedies and dosages are adjusted to suit age, health status and individual needs. Always follow professional guidance.

Yes, some herbs can interact with prescribed medications by increasing or reducing their effects. Always inform your herbalist about any medications or supplements you are taking so safe, appropriate remedies can be selected.

This depends on the condition and the individual. Acute symptoms may improve within hours or days, while long-term or chronic conditions usually take several weeks or months. Herbal medicine works gradually and consistently to restore balance.

The extraction method of herbs with alcohol is a lot stronger than water or glycerin. You get more of the properties of the herbs out and particularly if it's root herbs like goldenseal. Some compounds are not easily extracted in water only and some compounds don't get extracted at all. If you need the benefit of the whole plant quickly particularly with a difficult complex condition then I would recommend an alcohol extract, as liquid herbs are absorbed a lot quicker in the body. If you cannot tolerate alcohol then I would recommend a water and glycerate base or dried herb.

Herbal tinctures can be taken directly under the tongue, diluted in a small amount of water, added to tea or juice.

Always follow the dosage instructions on your bottle or those given by your practitioner. If unsure, contact our team for advice.

Most tinctures are taken one to three times per day, depending on the formula and your individual needs.

Dried Herbs & Herbal Teas

Add 1–2 teaspoons of dried herbs to a cup, pour over freshly boiled water, cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Roots and barks should be steeped for longer. Honey or lemon can be added if desired.

Most herbal teas can be enjoyed one to three times daily unless otherwise advised.

A herbal infusion involves steeping herbs for 15–30 minutes in a covered cup or teapot to extract more of the plant's active compounds.

Herbal oils are used topically to support skin health, relaxation, massage and areas of muscular or joint tension.
